Palliative Care, Hospice, and Wellness

Dr. Schroepfer is an associate professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Social Work. She is a recipient of the Hartford Geriatric Social Work Faculty Scholar Award, president of the national Association for Gerontology Education in Social Work, and serves on the national Social Work and Hospice Palliative Care Network and the National Coalition for Hospice and Palliative Care boards. Dr. Schroepfer’s research focuses on improving the care provided to those who are terminally ill. Her goals include gaining an understanding of factors that motivate a terminally elder’s consideration of a hastened death, determining the best strategies for meeting the psychosocial, cultural and spiritual needs of terminally ill elders, improving the assessment instruments used by hospice and palliative care social workers, as well as reducing the health disparities faced by medically underserved communities in Wisconsin. She has authored or co-authored 23 peer reviewed journal articles and three book chapters.

Dr. Schroepfer’s teaching and research focuses on the field of gerontology. In her research, she seeks to determine the best ways in which to meet the psychosocial and spiritual needs of terminally ill elders, as well as working with elders in medically underserved communities in Wisconsin on the reduction of cancer health disparities

Dr. Alexander Wolf has been Graduated in 2010 the National University “Kyiv-Mohyla Academy with the Diploma in Social Work. Later, in 2014 he graduated from University “Ukraine”, Kyiv as Phylosophy Doctor in Political Sciences, with the specialties including Social Policy, Social Work, Social communications. In 2011 he established the All-Ukrainian Association of palliative and hospice care where he has continued his research. Presently he is working at the National medical academy of postgraduate education in Kyiv as well as in abovementioned Association.

Palliative Care and hospice

Dr Joanne Reid is a Reader Associate Professor in cancer nursing. She is a prominent researcher in palliative care as evidenced by her publications in both professional and leading international journals, leadership of successful funding bids, and research awards. She has led qualitative, quantitative and mixed methods research which aims to improve the quality of life of palliative care patients and their lay and professional careers, along with improving palliative/end-of-life care education. Dr Reid is work had informed national end -of- life guidelines, she sits on several editorial boards and is associate Editor with BMC Palliative care and is an external examiner on the European certificate in essential palliative care course.

She has led qualitative, quantitative and mixed methods research which aims to improve the quality of life of palliative care patients and their lay and professional careers, along with improving palliative/end-of-life care education.

Dr. Rosenthal is an expert in clinical ethics, moral distress and research ethics, with special interests in endocrine ethics and reproductive ethics. Dr. Rosenthal is the author of over 50 publications, including peer-reviewed articles, blog posts, and consumer trade books on diabetes, thyroid disease and a range of women's health issues. She has served on several clinical practice guidelines as bioethicist; has been the consulting bioethicist to NGOs, and is Past Chair of the American Thyroid Association's Ethics Advisory Committee. Dr. Rosenthal has been quoted by the science and health media such as Discover Magazine and CNN, has appeared on TV and news shows to discuss current bioethical issues, and has delivered over 150 ethics presentations nationally and internationally.

Clinical ethics, moral distress and research ethics, with special interests in endocrine ethics and reproductive ethics

Thomas Johnson-Medland is the director of BAYADA Home Health and Hospice East Stroudsburg. Tom began hospice work in 1996 as a Pastoral Care Coordinator, also providing Bereavement Care, and Volunteer supervision. He also served as an educator and representative for Lighthouse Hospice, becoming their Director of Project Development and IT after attaining Three Master Certificates in Project Management with Villanova University. While at the retreat centre he was able to finish and publish seven book manuscripts. Upon completion of his tenure at the retreat house – in October of 2011 - he returned to Lighthouse Hospice as their Chief Information Officer. Tom became CEO in the autumn of 2012 and has continued the work of integrating services and values in the ever changing landscape of the American healthcare scene, working toward a unified collaboration between operations and clinical care amid the maelstrom of regulatory and compliance change.

He believes in the development of character and leadership as the forerunner of skills development in the life of healthcare individuals.

Dr. Periyakoil is a member of the study section for the National Institute of Aging, National Institutes of Health, the Senior Associate Editor of the Journal of Palliative Medicine and Associate Editor, the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society. She serves as the Chair of the Ethnogeriatrics Committee of the American Geriatrics Society, the Chair of the American Board of Internal Medicine’s Hospice & Palliative Medicine SEP Committee, Board member of the Council of faculty and Societies, founding Chair , Diversity Committee of the American Association of Medical Colleges. Her work has been and is funded by grants from NIH, HRSA, foundations as well as the Department of Veterans Affairs.

Palliative care, Geriatrics, ageing

Dr. Karen Jubanyik received her medical degree from Yale University School of Medicine. She completed residency training in Internal Medicine and a fellowship in Women’s Health, both at Yale-New Haven Hospital. Subsequently, she entered the first residency class for Emergency Medicine at Yale-New Haven Hospital and upon graduating, was hired as faculty for the Section of Emergency Medicine, now the Department of Emergency Medicine. She initially served as the Associate Residency Director for the Emergency Medicine Residency, and was active at the National level in developing novel ways to teach and assess the Core Competencies. Since June 2006, she has been the Director of the required Emergency Medicine Clerkship at the Yale School of Medicine. She is a member of the Society for Academic Emergency Medicine and the American College Emergency Physicians and is currently the President-elect of the Executive Board of the Connecticut College of Emergency Physicians and will be the President of the State Chapter of CCEP, beginning in October 2012.She serves on the Yale-New Haven Hospital Bio-Ethics Committee, has obtained additional training in End-of-Life and Palliative Care (EPEC-EM), and is the National Chair of the Society for Academic Emergency Medicine& Palliative Care Interest Group. Integrating Palliative Care and End-of-Life Care teaching to residents and medical students on all clerkships, including Emergency Medicine, has been a recent priority for Dr. Jubanyik. In addition to leading workshops in End-of-Life and Palliative Care for third year students, she is a core faculty member in the Ethics and Professional Responsibility course taught to first-year students. In the pre-clinical curriculum at the medical school, she leads workshops in Recognizing Intimate Partner Violence, Providing Culturally Competent Care, and The Patient Experience of Illness.
